Reuse and embodied carbon

The value of reuse. Measured for the project.

Renuvo Approved Methodology RNV-ECM-01 v0.1 estimates the embodied carbon avoided when eligible renewed carpet tiles are chosen instead of comparable newly manufactured flooring.

Commercial workplace with patterned carpet tiles

Standard reference scenario

Two product constructions.

Hard / bitumen-backed

3.6 kg

CO₂e per m² estimated embodied carbon avoided.

Cushion / acoustic-backed

3.9 kg

CO₂e per m² estimated embodied carbon avoided.

Mixed orders

Combined

The appropriate factor is applied to each eligible product type.

Figures are estimates under the defined RNV-ECM-01 standard reference scenario and compare eligible renewed flooring with the stated comparable new-product reference.

At project scale

A useful number for the project record.

For 1,000 m², the standard reference scenario equates to approximately 3.6 tonnes CO₂e for hard / bitumen-backed flooring or 3.9 tonnes CO₂e for cushion / acoustic-backed flooring.

Actual order evidence uses the eligible product construction and quantity recorded for that purchase.

  • Hard / bitumen-backed · 1,000 m²Approximately 3.6 tonnes CO₂e avoided.
  • Cushion / acoustic-backed · 1,000 m²Approximately 3.9 tonnes CO₂e avoided.
  • Order-level evidenceEligible purchases can be supported by an Embodied Carbon Avoidance Certificate.

How the estimate works

A defined comparison.

New carpet-tile reference impactRenuvo reuse-route impactEstimated embodied carbon avoided

Comparable construction

Hard / bitumen-backed flooring is compared with the same construction; cushion / acoustic-backed flooring is compared with its equivalent.

Reuse-route impacts

Relevant collection, renewal, energy, water, yield and delivery activity is included.

Recognised sources

The method draws on qualifying EPDs prepared to EN 15804, relevant principles from the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment, second edition, and applicable UK Government GHG conversion factors.

Defined scope

Offsets, assumed installation savings and future end-of-life credits are not added to the estimate.

RNV-ECM-01 v0.1 is Renuvo’s comparative embodied-carbon-avoidance methodology. Products without a confirmed eligible backing classification are not calculated or certified. It is not a complete project Whole Life Carbon Assessment or a RICS certification.

Use it in context

Let the evidence support the flooring decision.

Start with design, quantity, quality and project fit. Use the carbon estimate as supporting evidence once suitable flooring is identified.
